The term buff refers to an in-game “slang” term, used to represent beneficial spells cast on one player by him/herself, another player, or (in some select cases) NPCs. Buffs, for the most part, appear in the spell effects window (also known as the buff bar); short-duration buffs (also sometimes called Bard buffs, although Bard songs are not the short-duration buffs) go to the short-duration spell effects window, sometimes called the song window.
