[edit] General Information

The term Area of Effect, or AoE for short, refers to spells that hit multiple players.

[edit] Types of AoEs

Historically, the term AoE referred to spells that hit everybody within a circular range around the caster, but several types of AoE have evolved over the years:

[edit] PBAoE

"Point Blank Area of Effect"

The classic definition of AoE, this refers to the type of AoE that hits everybody within a circle (of varying range) of the caster. These spells are limited to 104 targets per cast.

[edit] Targeted AoE

"Targeted Area of Effect"

This type of AoE refers to a spell that hits everybody within range around the caster's target. For player-casted spells, these are limited to a maximum of four targets.

[edit] Rain AoE

"Rain Area of Effect"

There is a specific type of targeted AoE, generally called a rain AoE or simply rain spell that, rather than directly effecting the mob on target, will bind itself to that mob's location when the spell is cast and execute several hits (generally three) in an AoE around that spot. Each hit is independent of the others; if all mobs run out of the spell's effective area before the second hit, it won't land on them.

[edit] Cone AoE

"Cone-based Area of Effect"

Also known as directional AoEs, this type of AoE refers to a spell that hits everybody within range around the caster, who is also within a certain angle range. An example is Hail of Arrows, a Ranger spell that hits every possible target within a narrow (15o or so) cone in front of them. These are best known for their implications that allow Wizards to beamkite.

[edit] Zonewide AoE

"Zonewide Area of effect"

This type of AoE is relatively self-explanatory. It refers to spells that hit every player within a given zone. A good example is Aura of Destruction in Uqua.
