Damage over Time

[edit] General Information
The term "Damage over Time" (or "DoT") refers to spells that damage the target every tick; basically the antithesis of Heal over Time spells. The amount of damage is variable from spell to spell, and sometimes the spells provide other detrimental effects, such as a debuff. Classes that are known for their damage over time spells are Necromancers, Shamans, and to a lesser extent, Druids, Shadow Knights, and Beastlords.
Over the years, damage over time spells have evolved. They have gone from a perfectly constant amount of damage per tick, to a highly variable amount of damage (through Foci and critical AAs) per tick. This brought them more in line with nukes, which were previously capable of landing critically.
[edit] History
- February 10, 2004 - with the release of Gates of Discord, the first AAs were added that enable critical ticks for damage over time spells.
