[edit] General Information

Enchanters are one of the four pure intelligence casters of Norrath. They have the ability to mesmerize above that of Bards, and other classes' situational mesmerization; their haste is the best in the game; their slow is second only to Shamans; and they can charm any mob that isn't flagged immune (opposed to Druids, Magicians, and Necromancers who can each only charm certain types of mobs). All in all this is a pretty decent repertoire of abilities; however....

[edit] Controversy

Enchanters are a very sought-after class as far as raiding goes (mesmerization, their superior haste, and some other abilities are irreplaceable in many situations), they are not in a good situation as far as group content. Careful pulling often mitigates or even eliminates the need for mesmerization (although with Secrets of Faydwer dungeons, this issue has been somewhat resolved). Their slow is second to that of Shamans (and they do not have all the other powerful buffs) and above all else, many players find the class simply boring to play. Those who persevere have to compete with the Shaman class which is a serious problem if you take into consideration that shamans can slow, heal, and have access to a group version of "Spirit of the Panther" in TSS expansion; greatly boosting the DPS output of a group. The one thing that made an Enchanter stand out has been severely nerfed in the Omens of War expansion, namely the fine art of charming. This dramatic change played a large part in marking the beginning of the end for the class in most group scenarios.

An additional "problem" that has never been properly resolved is mobs often aggroing on enchanters when mesmerization type spells are broken prematurely unless the Enchanter is on the ball. This can be perceived as being punished for another player's "crime". Bards on the other hand get base aggro mesmerization songs thrown in their lap of which the effect is comparable; this really doesn't sit well with the handful of enchanters who actually try to enjoy their class to this day. Training AAs like Enhanced Forgetfulness and obtaining the Epic 1.5 mitigate this frustration but this Epic may not be within reach of all Enchanters.

This creates a major problem; raiding guilds need Enchanters, but in many cases have trouble finding them due to their very low (and dwindling) population. Because of this, raiding guilds find themselves stagnating due to lack of Enchanters (more so than most other classes).
