[edit] General Information
Experience Points (also known as exp or XP) are the staple of any RPG; and EverQuest is no different. In their simplest form, experience points are gained by killing mobs and, when a certain amount is reached, will increase one's character level. In EverQuest, however, experience points are more complicated than that.
It is true that a player will gain experience for killing mobs, and level at a certain amount of experience points. In addition to that, the following mechanics are in place:
- Players above level 10 lose experience when they die
- Players can do quests that yield experience
- At levels 51+, players can funnel some or all of their experience gained into alternate advancement points; this is mostly done by players at the level cap
- At any level, players can opt to filter 20% of their experience into group leadership points if they are the leader of a group of 3 or more players
- The leader of the group can also opt to mentor a specific group member; that member will receive a percentage of the leadership experience designated by the group leader
- At any level, the leader of a raid of 18 or more can filter 20% of their experience into raid leadership points; these are basically the same as group leadership points, and the stat effects stack with them, the only difference being that they effect the entire raid
- Most zones have a zone experience modifier or ZEM; this is expressed as a percent, and is a direct modifier to the amount of experience gained per kill in that zone
- This can be a positive or a negative modifier; in most cases it is positive
- Hot zones have their ZEM doubled
- Some races used to be subject to a small penalty to the amount of experience points they gained; this penalty has been removed across the board
- Some races gain a bonus to the amount of experience points they gain; it is unknown whether or not this bonus was repealed with the penalties
- Pets used to suck up 75% of the experience their owner gained if the pet did more than 50% of the damage; this was removed
- They still steal 50% of the experience if their owner does not deal any of the damage
