[edit] General Information

The term location (or loc, for short) can refer to one of two things; the first being a rather general idea, basically anything that could correctly answer the question "where are you?". The second being a set of coordinates in (y,x,z) format (yes, y comes first in the world of EverQuest, don't ask why) that numerically (and unambiguously) describe a player's current position, in their current zone.

Players can find their current location by typing the /location (or /loc) command. It will output, to the player's chat window, a message that states "Your current location is y,x,z". Before Sense Heading was automatically maxed out for all players, and before in-game maps, this was how most players would find their way until they got a feel for the zone's layout. Nowadays, /loc is mostly used to find specific landmarks, such as NPCs or named mobs.

[edit] Translating /loc coordinates to in-game map coordinates

If you are going to be taking a loc off of a web page or from a friend and wish to enter it into the in-game maps then you have to make some changes. As stated above the /loc command spits out:

Your Location is y,x,z.

However when you open up the txt file for the in-game map though you will see the following format (this is for Labels specifically):

P -x, -y, z, R, B, G, S, Name_of_what_you_are_labeling/marking

The P indicates that it is a point value, you might see other sets of numbers that start with an L those will refer to the lines on the map. Notice that in the in-game map files you swap the order of the y and x to the normal convention and change their signs (if they are negative make them positive and vice versa), but the z value stays the same. The R, B, and G represent the values between 0 and 255 needed to make the label the color you want it to be, this is easiest to change from in-game at a later time. S represents the size of the text: 1 is small, 2 is medium, and 3 is large. Note that for the text that you want to list for the name all spaces are replaced with underscores (_).
