[edit] General Information

According to EQ Lore Mayong, is the Eldest Vampire (the first), in all of Norrath; thus all following vampires in game are refered to as "his children".

Along with the Sleeper (Kerafyrm), the story of Mayong Mistmoore is one of the most followed in EverQuest. In game Mayong Mistmoore has always been in acquisition of power, and has always had some small part to play behind the scenes in many of the expansions. From swooning various women of darkness to creating minions from Hell, the immortal has always been a major character.

Mayong Mistmoore would eventually realize his dream, ascending from an immortal vampire, into a god, and wreak havok upon the Pantheon of Norrath. This story arc would take several years to unfold in game, and begins with the Lost Dungeons of Norrath and would span the Depths of Darkhollow, Prophecy of Ro and The Buried Sea expansions.

It is worth noting that there is also a faction from the Old World named after Mayong; this faction has to do with Castle Mistmoore on Faydwer.

[edit] History

[edit] Beta

Original Model
The model used for Mayong Mistmoore during beta

During the Beta period of EverQuest, Mayong could be found in the zone Castle Mistmoore, at some point either shortly before or shortly after the game went live he was removed from the zone. There are many stories about why he was removed, the most widely accepted is that he would somehow aggro people at the zone in, train the entire zone there, and then camp the zone line. Another prominent reason is that he had an AE Charm spell that would constantly crash the zone.

[edit] Mayong GM Avatar

As a GM
GMs sometimes used Mayong for dynamic quests

Once removed from the game, GMs would occasionally run dynamic events in Castle Mistmoore with one taking on the role of Mayong himself. Historically the GM controlled Mayong was in the game as "Baron Mayong Mistmoore", a handful of times; played by Brad McQuaid (EQ developer), on halloween 1999, and his children's birthday. There are many rumors that suggest a raiding guild attempted to kill him with 60 players and failed. These dynamic events eventually stopped completely, but gave birth to years of false rumors that Mayong would respawn every Halloween, at Midnight.

[edit] Lost Romance / MM removed from the game

It is known that Mayong Mistmoore had a love affair w/ Lanys T'Vyl (innrouk's daughter). In 1999 GMs held an event in Kithicor Forest; in which Mayong rescues his mistress Lanys T'Vyl at the last minute. The event is of significance because it introduced artifact weapons into the game for the first time. Together Mayong and Lanys searched for the one weapon Innrouk fears in game; "Malevolence" an Inny bane weapon / artifact that is given only to one person per server. This player is labled by a GM with the suffix "The Malevolent." But after breaking up w/ Lanys T'Vyl Mistmoore disappeared, putting the vampires into an uproar; which is the source of conflict between the vampires in the catacombs in the Ldon expansion. The Trueborn vampires (vampires first turned by Mayong), were in a power struggle with the Scion (vampires turned from one of MM children).

[edit] Kunark

n Kunark we discover Mayong has a rival Venril Sathir; whose dark powers over necromancy repelled Mayong's armies. Mayong Mistmoore grew tired of the failures of his dark elf army, and thus he "experimented" and created the drachnids, to aid in his power struggles against Venril. see Agents of Mistmoore faction, and The Dark Truths (volume 7).

[edit] Velious

In the Velious expansion Mayong Mistmoore had a love affair w/ Tserrina (Tower of Frozen shadows).

[edit] Mayong's Love

Mayong's lover, Tserrina, appears in game as a vampire who rules the Tower of Frozen Shadow.

Ariah Teller (NPC librarian), in Dreadspire Keep, gives the in game lore to the seduction and abandoment of Tserrina. Mayong left abandoned Tserrina at the wedding alter, (the fifth floor of the tower of frozen shadow). It became important for Players to know this lore about Mayong when talking to Ariah Teller. Depending on how players answered Ariah Teller's dialogue, would determine one of four possible endings upon Mayong's defeat in the Demi-Plane of Blood.

There is confirmation within one of the final dialogs after Mayong is defeated in the Demi-Plane of Blood that Tserrina's soul still loves and waits for Mayong.

[edit] Lost Dungeons

With the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion, Mistmoore's Catacombs were unearthed, sadly, Mayong was nowhere to be found.

Players who managed to win 68 missions in the Lost dungeon of Norrath expansion, were given a hint by the dwarf Vual Stoutest, as to why Mayong had disappeared, and a glimpse of where future developers would pickup the Mayong storyline four years later with the Depths of Darkhollow expansion.

Vual Stoutest says, The Trueborn and Scions spend so much time focusing on getting attention and praise they will never receive. Mayong Mistmoore has not been back here since the Wayfarers Brotherhood found his catacombs. We are fairly certain Mayong has no interest here other than keeping a sufficient force of vampires and undead. My view? I think he aims to become a deity of his own making.

[edit] Depths of Darkhollow

With the release of Depths of Darkhollow expansion, Mayong Mistmoore had returned to the forefront of the storyline. When adventurers began to explore the caverns beneath Nektulos, they found, Mayong Mistmoore who had fashioned himself an extraplanar realm, the Demi-Plane of Blood, in which Mayong sought to make hiself a diety. After waiting six years, players could finally kill Mayong Mistmoore, in a raid instance; the result of which Mayong would finally realize his dreams, and shed his body to enter the pantheon as a diety.

Upon players defeating Mayong Mistmoore in the Demi plane of blood, Mayong sheds his mortal body, and ascent into true godhood.

The Demi-Plane of Blood is strangely silent. Though Mayong's body is unmoving, his presence can still be felt. His booming voice suddenly fills the halls of the Keep, coming from all directions.

Mayong shouts, 'This is the sweetest victory I could have ever hoped for.'

Mayong shouts, 'The focused devotion and attention you demonstrated here have lent strength and credibility to my divinity.'

Mayong shouts, 'You have unwittingly worshipped me, and you have martyred me.'

Another shimmering figure fades into view, floating near the first. As she materializes, her body shifts into focus, revealing the form of a young female.

The spirit of Tserrina howls, 'You are all that remains of the mortality of Mayong, shed off and discarded when he became a deity.'

A hollow voice laments, 'Then, I am not long for this world. Perhaps you and I will meet again on the other side?'

The two figures embrace. Tserrina's face comes into sharp focus and she is strikingly beautiful, the features of her mortal spirit not twisted by malice. Insubstantial tears roll down her cheeks.

The spirit of Tserrina howls, 'That is unlikely, my love.'

The figures fade away quietly, clinging desperately to one another.

At some point after Mayong's defeat (it is unknown when), the following dialog ensues:

Mayong shouts, 'And thus was born a new era upon the world of Norrath. My era.'

Mayong shouts, 'Let the world know that a new deity has joined the pantheon . . . and his name is Mayong Mistmoore!'

Mayong shouts, 'My drachnid armies and legions of the living dead are poised to attack!'

Mayong shouts, 'At a moment's notice, they will spread across Antonica and Faydwer like a plague, annihilating mankind and laying waste to everyone and everything not pledging allegiance to me.'

Mayong shouts, 'However, with my ascension, I have much more important matters to attend to.'

Mayong shouts, 'Consider your lands safe . . . for now.'

[edit] Prophecy of Ro

Even with the ascent into diety, Mayong's lust for power was not Quenched. Mayong the diety, began to wreak chaos upon the rest of the pantheon.

Mayong, invaded the Plane of Music and twisted it into his own Theater of Blood. Enslaving Ayonae Ro and imprisoning her inside her own tower Deathknell. Though Mayong has spread his influence, he is absent from the Plane leaving his first three confidants in his stead.

[edit] The Buried Sea

We later find that after his conquest in the Plane of Music MM gained confidence and invaded the Plane of Sun. Solusek Ro's domain fell to Mayong's most powerful lieutenants, but the Sun God himself was not so easily corrupted as Ayonae Ro was. In fact, it seems that the God of Vampires must remain nearby, within Solteris, to continue his stranglehold on the Plane of Sun.

Again players were able to confront Mayong Mistmoore again, this time as a diety. After waiting 8 long years, players were finally given the chance to fight and destroy one of Norrath's major Storline figures.

The vampire god has been slain!

In an instant you are almost blinded by a sudden increase in the light all around you. A clap of thunder rocks the island under your feet and you somehow know in your bones that the darkness that cloaked Norrath has at last been lifted due to your actions this day!

As the vampire Mayong Mistmoore lies dead on the ground his features begin to shrivel slowly and then more and more rapidly as if time were doing the cruel work of centuries upon the self-styled god. Mayong's body seems to fall in on itself, reduced to little more than a husk. You hear, as if from a great distance, a tiny wail of frustration and pain that seems to fade away into nothingness. All around you the light seems just a bit brighter and you sense that somehow the darkness that surrounded this creature of the night has been fully removed from the world.

The disembodied voice of Mayong Mistmoore speaks softly. 'As I said before, you are exceptional beings, far more exceptional than I ever imagined. You have undone me when I thought no force ever could.'

The disembodied voice of Mayong Mistmoore continues. 'It is a relief, in a way, to be free from the burdens of immortality. But I am sure mortality will begin to chaffe again soon enough...'

[edit] Secrets of Faydwer

It should be mentioned that although Mayong does not resurface in this expansion, his previous actions as a diety continue to ripple across Norrath. Indirectly causing the Orc race, who were immune to lycanthropy, to become susceptible to the disease during the waning of Solusek Ro's sun.
