The term random number generator, or RNG for short, refers to (rather aptly) the engine that generates random numbers for EverQuest. Most everything a player does is dictated by the random number generator; melee attacks and leveling skills (tradeskills especially), for instance.

Common criticism for EQ's random number generator is that it is very "spotty" or "streaky". For example, in melee combat, many players have noticed that when they miss once, they will commonly miss several times in a row; or, when tanking a mob, if they get hit for high damage once, it will happen several times in a row.
